Therapy for Animals: A Complete Guide to Animal Color Therapy

Here’s a mind-blowing fact: your cells communicate using light

In the 1970s, German scientist Fritz Albert Popp discovered that healthy cells emit more than 100,000 light impulses per second. You and everyone you know are essentially beings of light. That includes your pets.

Have you noticed that your pet prefers some colors and avoids others? If we are all made of light, how do color wavelengths affect us?

Learn what your pet is telling you and how you can respond like a pet psychic in this guide to color therapy!

What is Animal Color Therapy?

Color therapy, sometimes called Chromotherapy or Colorology, is a holistic health technique. This practice uses specific colors to rebalance the body, mind, spirit, and emotions. Color therapy exposes different areas of the body and the eyes to colored light.

Color therapy has become a prominent application for humans, and many veterinary practices are starting to show interest in this healing technique.

Of course, finding the right healing colors for an animal is a little more complicated than it is for a human. Animals cannot verbally tell us how they’re feeling, so determining which colors will be helpful requires keen attention to detail.

Why Use Color Therapy for Animals?

There are many types of pet therapy, but how does color therapy work? Can animals even see color? Yes, they can!

Humans have three color cones in our eyes: red, greed, and blue. Dogs have two, and researchers generally assume that they can see in blue-green colorways. Felines have up to four color cones, so their color vision may look very different from ours!

Even so, you don’t actually need to see colors for them to alter your health and mindset. For example, neither humans nor animals can see ultraviolet or infrared rays, but they still affect our bodies.

Colored light has a frequency and vibration, and different colors have different wavelengths. Like other wavelengths on the electromagnetic spectrum, colored light can penetrate the body, affecting the limbic system and brain. Therapeutic exposure to color can influence your pet’s health and behavior!

How to Use Color Therapy

Much of color theory is based on the chakra system, which assigns colors to organs and bodily systems. You can expose your pet to colors through lighting or objects they frequently interact with. Some practical applications of color theory for pet owners include:

  • Colored gels and LED lights
  • Colored goggles for short-term wear
  • Silk or cotton bandanas
  • Ceramic bowls
  • Bedding and blankets
  • Toys

Rainbow: Balance and Connection

Rainbow lighting and objects project all wavelengths of visible light. Rainbow can be useful for balancing the whole system and restoring the body-mind relationship. Some theories suggest that rainbow may be especially helpful for pets who have experienced recent stress or trauma.

Red: Vitality and Energy

In the chakra system, red symbolizes the root chakra, which affects the adrenal system. Red increases energy and excitement but may lead to agitation or aggression if used too much. Use red to boost your pet’s courage and confidence.

Physically, red deeply penetrates the musculoskeletal system, aiding in pain relief and energy. Red can also help with problems like constipation, urination, and hypertension.

Orange: Enthusiasm and Hormonal Balance

Orange symbolizes the sacral chakra, which is connected to reproductive health. Orange offers positive energy, confidence, and happiness. Use orange to bring your pet joy and encourage social interaction.

Orange in the body offers hormonal balance and may help with reproductive issues. For this reason, orange is a great color to use while your pet is pregnant or nursing. Orange may also uplift depression and relieve congestion.

Yellow: Warmth and Flexibility

Yellow represents the solar plexus chakra, which relates to the liver, pancreas, stomach, and small intestine. Yellow provides warmth and comfort and is especially useful for pets who need reassurance during training. Yellow also brings flexibility and playfulness to rigid pets.

Physically, yellow can strengthen the immune and endocrine systems. It aids in detoxification and digestion and may benefit pets with diabetes, pancreatitis, or other conditions.

Green: Well-being and Love

In the chakra system, the heart chakra is green. Green color therapy provides a sense of well-being and peace. Green relieves tension, relaxes your pet, and shows them your unconditional love.

This color penetrates the body and supports the joints, heart, and nervous system. Green is a great therapeutic choice for pets with heart conditions or those undergoing an operation.

Blue: Calm and Relaxation

Blue symbolizes the throat chakra in the chakra system, which connects to the throat, lungs, and thyroid. Blue emits a cool, soothing frequency to support meditation and sleep. Use blue to pacify a nervous pet and encourage them to rest and relax.

Blue may help with respiratory issues, thyroid dysfunction, and anxiety in the body. Blue is a great choice for supporting pets with asthma or an upper respiratory infection.

Violet: Spirituality and Creativity

Violet represents the crown chakra, which represents the brain and pineal gland. Violet can also express creativity and emotional release. Using violet for color therapy will help you and your pet connect on a spiritual level.

Physically, violet soothes the nervous system and resets the circadian rhythm, creating a regular sleep cycle. Violet also promotes self-expression, intelligence, and creativity, making it a great therapeutic choice for pets in training.

Other Colors for Animal Therapy

This list covers some of the most common colors used in pet therapy, but the possibilities are endless. Every color comes in various tones, shades, and vibrations which may be tweaked to suit specific needs. Some other therapeutic colors include:

  • Pink: nurturing and peacefulness
  • White: clarity and new beginnings
  • Brown: trust and consistency
  • Black: protection and silence
  • Sliver: acceptance and perseverance
  • Gold: strength and inspiration
